Securing Future Applications - Dr. Jonathon Giffin, Assistant Professor, School of Computer Science, Georgia Institute of Technology

As mobile and fixed networks converge and mobile devices like smart phones become the primary means of communication and data access in the enterprise and consumer spaces, these systems will become targets of sophisticated security threats. We need usable and easy to deploy security techniques to protect sensitive data on such devices. In this talk, we will focus on the challenges that arise in securing mobile devices and converged telephony applications. To address these challenges, we will explore how call features can be automatically extracted and analyzed to determine if a caller is legitimate. For mobile devices, we will explore challenges posed by malware based threats and how they could be addressed.

About the Presenter: Dr. Jonathon Giffin is an Assistant Professor who joined the Georgia Tech College of Computing in Fall 2006. Since then he has become a member of the Georgia Tech Information Security Center (GTISC). He earned my Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 2006, where he was a Wisconsin Distinguished Fellow. Also at Wisconsin, he received a B.S. degree in Mathematics in 2000 and a M.S. degree in Computer Sciences in 2002.

Dr. Giffin enjoys research in software security, operating system security, and attack analysis. His research builds upon techniques from program analysis, formal methods, and operating systems to retrofit security to insecure systems and software. He investigates both defensive systems and attacks against those systems. On the defensive side, he designs new intrusion detection systems that prevent anomalous program execution by constraining execution to a model of expected execution behavior derived from static program analysis. To evaluate the ability of intrusion detectors to actually detect attacks, he then attack the detectors. Formal analysis of the detectors provides insight into their true attack detection capability and illuminates weaknesses requiring continued research into intrusion detection.

IT Enabling Product Innovation Amit Shahani, Director, Verizon

Verizon will lead a discussion on how IT is enabling one of its key business initiatives called “Connected Home.”  They will take us through a “behind the scenes” look at the infrastructure, applications, and project management planning to support this endeavor. The integration of entertainment/video, home control and monitoring, video conferences, and other applications will do two things according to Verizon’s vision. First and foremost it will streamline their products and services to benefit consumers. On top of that, from an IT perspective, it will shift IT’s role into more of a business driver and catalyst position than ever before.

Information Systems for a Customer Centric Enterprise- Bruce McLeod, Executive Director of Service & Enterprise Architecture, Cox Communications

According to Bruce McLeod, Executive Director, Service & Enterprise Architecture at Cox Communications, "customer-centric" is a term that is broadly used in business today. Interpretations of the term vary and often leave the IT solution designer and implementer confused as to what elements are needed to make their solutions customer centric. How must customer data be treated and how must the solution present itself to the customer for maximum business benefit? Depending on the mission of the enterprise the solution can take many forms. Understanding the impact of a solution on customer satisfaction is a starting point for the designer but the more fundamental dependencies on existing solutions and data management also come into play. What considerations must be taken into account that allow your enterprise to evolve from where it is today to a more customer-centric future? In this presentation, these questions and points will be addressed, as McLeod shares how he and his team at Cox are working to meet these challenges.

About the Presenter: Bruce McLeod has 20+ years experience in Systems Engineering and Architecture. He is currently Executive Director of Service & Enterprise Architecture in the Technology department in Atlanta, Georgia. Bruce’s background in Technology began with the United States Army and included positions in telecommunications operation, engineering, and architecture with service providers and solution vendors. Prior to joining Cox in 2002, he was the Systems Engineering Manager for TollBridge Technologies, a manufacturer of Voice over IP Media Gateways. He has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Degree from the University of South Carolina.
